JRL endorse use of the SIMPRO MegaDumper® in construction waste workflow
The JRL Group offers managed integrated construction solutions and encompasses 14 divisions delivering bespoke solutions for the most complex construction projects.
Their goal is to deliver a complete construction service at the right time every time. Plan Safe Work Safe is the Group Policy designed to bring about a proactive cultural approach to health and safety. Their aim is to ensure that everyone working for, with and around them is protected from harm and every action contributes to their own and others safety and well being.
This is no mean feat to put into practice. Each construction site is different and poses numerous challenges, but still requires implementation of their safety first approach. Management of waste on site can add to these challenges, frequently requiring innovative solutions.
The problem
Midgard, the main contracting division of the Group, is carrying out work to build the Octagon, a 49-storey residential tower in the middle of Birmingham. They have implemented this work with a ground-breaking approach; each level is built to completion before moving onto the next, in a continuous workflow.
In an inner city location, space is at a premium. How then to manage the waste processing and removal in a confined space?
The challenge presented was how to get waste from each floor to a skip in a manner that reduces unnecessary footfall and makes the workflow simple. The plan was for construction waste to be collected in 1100ltr bins and returned to the ground via the construction elevators. This enabled the waste to be managed throughout the day and not wait until the end of the day. The benefits of clear space to continue to work were obvious, particularly with the build methodology of this project.
However, this would result in a bottleneck of waste at the ground level. Adding to the problem was the lack of space to use forklifts to move the rubbish quickly and lift it into the 40 yard RORO skip.
What we did
After site visits we identified the Simpro MegaDumper® as the ideal solution to Midgard’s problem. It has a 600 kg lift capacity and can empty 240ltr, 660ltr, and 1100ltr bins to a height in excess of that required for a 40 yard RORO skip.
The introduction of the MegaDumper® was game changing. It was positioned adjacent to the skip where the site team simply had to load the filled bins into it, close the safety gate and the bin is lifted and tipped into the skip. The empty bins can then be returned to the construction floor to be filled.
The MegaDumper® was moved around the skip to ensure an even distribution of the waste within the skip. It was also easy to be moved to other skip locations which meant there was no downtime waiting for one skip to be removed and another put in place. Robust heavy-duty castor wheels mean it could even be moved over rough ground.
The result
The straightforward workflow to seamlessly remove waste from the site has brought numerous benefits to the build team. It has saved both time and site vehicle movements, making the waste handling process simple and economical. It has also minimised the risk of any lifting hazards for the workforce.
It has brought additional benefit as smaller waste bins (240ltr/660ltr) are also employed on site for other waste streams that have been manually loaded historically but now can be loaded into the RORO using the MegaDumper® and therefore eliminates risk of injury from manual lifting.
What the client said
“The MegaDumper® is a great piece of kit. We found it very easy to set up upon delivery and very easy and simple to use. On a busy day we can empty comfortably over 100 bins into our 40 yard skips which means the MegaDumper® really makes a difference with waste management on site. Plus it is very low maintenance.
“Even though the MegaDumper® is quite a substantial piece of kit, we have also found it very easy to move around. This means it is not only useful as we can move it around to fill all areas of the skip, we can also use it to fill other skips onsite.
“I highly recommend using a MegaDumper® and would definitely want to use it on future projects.”
